Oliver’s hoof taps

Oliver’s hoof taps
In 2021, we noticed the hoof wall on Oliver's hind hooves was wearing down unevenly. Our farrier suggested hoof taps

Tap, tap, tap…..

If you have been to the DSC, you’ve likely met Oliver, the blind donkey who joined us in 2019 and quickly became a favourite. We’ve discovered that when things disrupt Oliver’s routine, he can feel a bit stressed, and he has a unique way of pacing in a tight circle, always moving counter-clockwise.

In 2021, we noticed that Oliver’s hoof wall on his hind hooves was wearing down unevenly due to his pacing habits and the hard ground. After consulting with our amazing farrier Wendy Wood Farrier Service, she recommended trying out a product called “hoof taps” to protect his hooves.

These hoof taps are like little heroes—small, pliable metal bars (see photo below) that are placed in Oliver’s hoof wall to prevent uneven wear. They stay in place until they naturally fall out or are expertly removed by our farrier during routine care.

Initially, Oliver needed hoof taps on both hind feet, but thanks to the regular care he receives here at the DSC, as well as the magic touch of our farriers, he now only needs one hoof tap for prevention rather than treatment.

The beauty of the hoof tap is that it’s a breeze to apply, and it’s been a game-changer in keeping Oliver’s feet happy and healthy. We’re thrilled to see him thrive and continue to enjoy his days with us!
