Jennet (female donkey)
Before being admitted to The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada (DSC), Misty lived on a farm in Ontario. Misty’s owners contacted the DSC when they began noticing signs that Misty had sore feet. Their farrier suspected that it was laminitis, a severe and painful condition that can happen when donkeys are fed a diet that is too rich. Once donkeys experience an episode of laminitis, they are susceptible to repeat occurrences. Strict nutritional management is required to prevent this from happening. Any symptoms of laminitis must be treated quickly and intensively.
When Misty first arrived at the DSC, it was obvious she was very uncomfortable. She would spend most of her time lying down, and often she would stand with her front feet forward, shifting her weight from foot to foot, a common stance for donkeys who are suffering from laminitis.
Our farrier was brought in immediately to work to ensure that Misty’s hooves were trimmed to the best possible balance. Within two weeks she was given her first pair of special shoes which had soft pads to support her soles.
Like any donkey who is admitted to the DSC, Misty will be given lifelong care, along with the best possible medical and farrier attention to ensure she is able to walk and stand comfortably at all times.
