Our Admission Process

Our Admission Process

While we may all hope to be able to keep our four-legged loved ones forever, a donkey’s long lifespan and unique care needs can make this difficult for some caregivers. The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada (DSC) also understands that some aspects of life are inevitably beyond our control and may force us to make alternative plans. We appreciate that donkeys are often considered a part of the family and rehoming them for many is a difficult decision to make. We are here to help.

What to expect when an animal gets admitted to the DSC:

  • Peace, freedom and protection
  • The best possible care and medical attention
  • The right of life regardless of age or condition
  •  A dignified, peaceful death, induced only in the event of extreme suffering and the loss of quality of life
  •

We work to uphold the Five Freedoms:

The Five Freedoms describes the 5 primary needs of all animals. It was developed by the Farm Animal Welfare Council of the UK in the 1960’s, a group comprised of leading scientists in agriculture, animal care and behavior and ethics. Since then the Five Freedoms has become a globally recognized concept in animal welfare as it illustrates the gold standards for the care, management and housing of all animals.

  • Freedom from hunger and thirst
    • By ready access to fresh water and diet to maintain health and vigor
  • Freedom from discomfort
    • By providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area
  • Freedom from pain
    • By prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment
  • Freedom to express normal behaviour
    • By providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind
  • Freedom from fear and distress
    • By ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering

Please feel free to read our Admissions Process further in the below document.

Are there other ways you can help me and my donkey?

We understand that just like any other pet owner, donkey owners sometimes need help from experienced professionals. We are here for you! If you are experiencing issues in caring for your donkeys please contact us. We can discuss whether there are other ways we can be of assistance or if admission could be right for you and your donkey(s) and/or mule(s).
