A Message to the DSC Community

Dear Friends,

For the past 20 years it's been my privilege to guide the operations of The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada. In that period we have been able to provide a haven, frequently of last resort, to over 145 equines. This has all been possible due to our donors' faithful, generous support along with the work of our dedicated staff and volunteers.

Earlier this year, this conviction about the future of the DSC prompted my decision to begin to step back from the day to day operations of the Sanctuary. The time has arrived for fresh, innovative ideas to be brought forth to guide the organization.

To that end, a search was begun in April for a new Executive Director and as a result, Katharin Harkins was offered the position. Along with her lifelong commitment to the cause of animal welfare, Katharin's extensive experience in both management and communications made her the ideal candidate for the position. Additionally, as a longtime supporter of the Sanctuary, she was already very familiar with our work.

On June 25th, we were pleased to welcome Katharin in her new role of Executive Director of The Donkey Sanctuary of Canada. To ensure continuity, Katharin and I will 'transition' over the next several weeks.

As far as my personal future is concerned, I will continue as always to support the DSC in spirit, to take part in special projects, and to serve as a Board Member. I will not be far away, though. Our retirement home is currently under construction and it is located on a lot at the north-east corner of the Sanctuary Farm. On a daily basis it will continue to be my joy to walk around the property with my dogs and to marvel at the beauty of fields dotted with our beautiful donkey and mule friends.

With best wishes and much gratitude,

Sandra
